Introduction

On completion of this unit, students will have the skills, knowledge, and attributes to undertake shipboard operations relevant to a trainee deck officer as required by the STCW Convention under the supervision of a Deck or Engineer Officer or Chief Integrated Rating. This unit is delivered via classroom theory, tutorials, web-based learning, and practical work in an actual and a simulated shipboard environment.

• Identify and describe a variety of types, construction, and layout of vessels
• Demonstrate basic seamanship including: anchoring, mooring marine rigging, ropework and marine knots, shipboard maintenance, and maintenance at height.
• Explain basic engine-room operations and use of a variety of deck machinery
• Demonstrate effective written and verbal shipboard communication skills.
