Introduction
This unit will provide students with the theoretical understanding and practical knowledge of Marine Electronic Navigation equipment to enable the equipment to be used to the best advantage with full understanding of the capabilities and limitations. This unit builds on the knowledge gained in year 1. It meet the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-II/1 of the STCW code.

Learning Outcomes
- Describe the errors and limitations associated with radar and ARPA equipment and their implications for vessel safety.
- Interpret the data from an ARPA, and from a paper radar plot, determine the risk of collision, and estimate effective action to avoid a close quarter’s situation.
- Set-up and operate radar and ARPA equipment for navigation and collision avoidance
- Describe the errors associated with electronic navigation equipment and the implications for vessel safety of the errors and limitations of the equipment.
