Marine Transportation II unit (JND312)

Introduction

This unit is intended to explain how to plan, load, secure, carry and unload various types of cargoes including cargoes of hazardous and perishable nature. The unit discusses the industry practices and procedures appropriate to cargo type and the ships in which different types of goods are carried. The regulatory regime pertaining to cargoes and materials handling equipment will be examined in some detail. The unit will build on knowledge attained in Marine Transportation I of the second year of studies. This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-II/2 of the STCW code.

Learning Outcomes

• Identify and manage the characteristics of a broad range of cargoes commonly transported by sea including general cargo; containerized cargo; dry bulk commodities; oil, grain, livestock, and timber deck cargo.
• Complete a range of calculations to do with cargo weight determination including draught surveys; tank ullaging and deadweight calculations.
• Interpret and summarize the various regulations – both international and Australian – that govern the safe carriage of goods by sea.
• Understand the procedures used by cargo terminals ashore to plan and manage cargo operations.

Teaching Pattern	Blended delivery in the form of lectures and online learning supplemented with consolidated face to face learning and practical training in simulated ship environment towards the end of semester Students attending classes and students electing to study on flexible mode will follow the same class time table. Total lecturing hours have not changed from the existing.
