Introduction
This unit introduces students to the shipping industry and to the duties, ¿¿responsibilities, and lifestyle of a Marine Engineering Officer. The focus of this unit is ¿¿to develop a basic knowledge of vessel construction, operation of propulsion ¿machinery, and ¿auxiliary machinery systems. This knowledge is taught through theory ¿classes, and web-based ¿learning and may be enhanced through practical activities on ¿equipment like that ¿which they will encounter on-board ship. On completion of this unit, ¿students will have the ¿skills, knowledge, and attributes to undertake shipboard ¿operations relevant to a Trainee ¿Engineer/Officer as required by the STCW 2010 ¿Convention under the supervision of an ¿Engineer/Officer.¿
This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding, and proficiency set ¿out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila ¿Amendments), and Table A-III/1 of the STCW Code.¿

Learning Outcomes
- ¿Outline the fundamental procedures, practices, and legislative requirements for ¿marine engineers with emphasis on investigating hazards and control methods ¿associated with the operation and maintenance of shipboard machinery and ¿equipment.¿
- ¿Describe the general arrangement by explaining the purpose and ¿construction of major structural components of selected commercial vessel ¿types (including propulsion plant layouts). ¿
- ¿Demonstrate the ability to understand the hazards associated with the electrical ¿¿systems onboard the ship and evaluate safe operating procedures.¿
- ¿Explain the system and operating principles of selected marine propulsion, ¿auxiliary systems and deck machinery with an emphasis on system ¿components.¿
