Introduction
This unit focuses on the mathematics applications required for theoretical units in this course and underpins the students’ understanding of ship construction, ship stability, and hydrostatics appropriate to Engineer Watchkeeper Certificate of Competency level. It is designed to instill critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students, which is essential from an engineering operational perspective. Furthermore, the student will be able to correctly identify the various ship construction methods, its components and appreciate the stability concepts regarding cargo shifts, fuel and water transfer, and the effect of liquid free surface. Also, students can apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills gained in this unit to solve problems in other units. This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments), and Table A-III/1 of the STCW Code.

Learning Outcomes
- Solve problems involving calculus as applied in differentiation and integration and advanced algebra.
- Solve problems involving complex numbers.
- Perform on areas, volumes, centroids, and pressures on tank and hull surfaces calculations.
- Predict lightship particulars and transverse stability of ships involving loading, unloading, cargo movement, trim, and free surface effects.
- Describe various structural members of ships and the roles of various maritime regulatory bodies on design, construction, and operation of ships.
