Marine Thermodynamics unit (JNE237)

To achieve a pass in this Unit, you must meet all the following: 

  • Complete all assessments. 
  • Achieve an aggregate mark of 50% from the marks of both assessment tasks. 
  • Your mark for the final examination must be at least 50%. 

Introduction

Thermodynamics is a key area within the marine engineering discipline. The purpose of this unit is to provide the necessary knowledge and skills in understanding the design concepts and applying basic thermodynamic principles to safely operate main and auxiliary machinery. This unit develops skills in managing the efficient operation of such plants and machinery by the marine engineers. The unit focuses on both thermodynamic problems and solving operational theory relevant to machinery for shipboard use. A student completing this unit can apply the knowledge gained and understand the safe and economical operation and management of marine machinery. This unit meets the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements set out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments), and Table A-III/1 of the STCW Code.

Teaching

Teaching Pattern
  • On-Campus:¿¿Weekly 2.5-hour lectorials totalling 30 hours through the semester.

This is a blended unit allowing students the flexibility of attending face-to-face classes on-campus or studying remotely during their initial 10 weeks of the semester.

Teaching and learning will be achieved primarily by weekly lectorials. This will be supported by self-learning & self-assessing material provided through MyLO. Collaborative discussion forums provided in MyLO will allow for peer support.

Lectorial sessions will be recorded and uploaded to MyLO. This will allow online students to view these sessions once they are uploaded. The lecturer will monitor MyLO discussion forums and email queries to support online students.
