Introduction
This unit provides students with the basic theoretical knowledge and skills required ¿to contribute to the safer operation of the ship as a watchkeeping Engineer.¿ Students will be provided with an understanding of the construction, operating ¿principles and characteristics of the steam and motor ships power plant and the ¿associated auxiliary systems to enable the safe and efficient operation at the ¿Engineer Watchkeeper level. The unit will also provide the basis for the further study ¿required to achieve higher qualifications
This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set ¿out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila ¿Amendments) and Table A- III/1 of the STCW Code.

Learning Outcomes
- ¿Explain and demonstrate the understanding of the functioning of the relevant ¿auxiliary systems and their safe operation and maintenance.¿
- ¿Describe the relevant systems and with the aid of sketches, describe the ¿operational and design features of the systems.¿
- ¿Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to comply with the requirements of the ¿maritime legislation pertaining to MARPOL, SOLAS, STCW and Load line ¿Conventions at a management level.¿
- ¿Apply knowledge gained to safely manage the operational maintenance ¿requirements of shipboard auxiliary equipment and machinery under both ¿normal and abnormal conditions.¿
- ¿Evaluate safe working practices in meeting the legislative requirements, ¿Codes of practice, permits to work and environmental concerns including life-¿saving apparatus and fire-fighting equipment and machinery.¿
