Operational Marine Engineering (Motor) unit (JNE242)

Introduction

This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills to plan, manage and carry out engineering operations, maintenance, and repairs on diesel engine and ancillary systems on commercial vessels. This includes the design, operational principles, construction, safety, statutory requirements, trouble shooting, testing and measurements, repairs and maintenance to enable safe and efficient operation of the machinery from an operational level engineer. It also includes liaison with internal and external stakeholders.

This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-III/1 of the STCW code.

  • Understand and describe the working principles, construction, and operating procedures (under normal, transient, and emergency situations) of Diesel engines and their associated systems.
  • Demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to operate on board auxiliary machinery and their associated systems, including routine inspections, testing, and maintenance.
  • Identify safe watch keeping routines; collect and analyse data to evaluate operating conditions.
  • Apply best practice of theoretical and practical knowledge in monitoring and responding to various operational emergencies.
  • Evaluate safe working practices in accordance meeting legislative requirements, codes of practice, permits to work and environmental concerns (including LSA, FFE and machinery).
