Operational Marine Engineering (Steam) unit (JNE243)

Introduction

This unit has been designed to provide the learner with the required basic knowledge and skills to contribute to the safe operation of the Ship as a watch-keeping Engineer. This unit will provide students with an understanding of the construction, operating principles, and characteristics of the Steam ship's power plant and their associated auxiliary systems, to enable safe and efficient operation, at the Engineer Watchkeepers level during steady state, transient, and fault conditions. This unit will also provide the basis for the further study required by higher qualifications.

This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW (2010 Manila Amendments) and Table A-III/1 and AIII/2 of the STCW Code.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand and describe the working principles, construction, and operating procedures (under normal, transient, and emergency situations) of Boilers and Steam turbines and their associated systems
  • Demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to operate on board auxiliary machinery and their associated systems, including routine inspections, testing, and maintenance.
  • Identify the safe watch-keeping routines; collect and analyze data to evaluate operating conditions.
  • Apply best practice of theoretical and practical knowledge in monitoring and responding to various operational emergencies.
  • ¿Identify and follow safe working practices in accordance with WHS/OHS and ¿other legislative requirements, Codes of Practice, Safety Management ¿Systems, and environmental considerations.¿
  • ¿Interpret data and communicate effectively using written content and sketches.¿
