Introduction
This unit provides students with the advanced theoretical knowledge required to understand the practical concepts involving machinery, systems and equipment on commercial vessels and related shore based installations. It analyses the mechanical engineering applications of marine machinery and systems, including internal and external combustion engines, pumping and piping systems, lifting gear, drive systems and structural members.
This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the Maritime Training Package MAR60120, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-III/1 & A-III/2, of the STCW code.

Learning Outcomes
- Apply the principles of statical equilibrium to determine forces in members, supports and connections of marine machinery components and structures
- Apply the laws of linear, angular and gravitational motion, the law of conservation of energy, laws of friction and principles of simple harmonic motion to solve problems on various marine machinery components.
- Analyse simple stresses and strains in single and composite components united to mechanical static and suddenly applied loads, centrifugal force, internal pressure and thermal loads
- Apply theories of bending and torsion to marine machinery components to calculate the various stresses acting on the same
- Apply theory of continuity, Bernouilli’s theorem & Darcy’s formula to fluids at rest and in motion flowing through pipes and nozzle, and perform calculations.
