Introduction
Thermodynamics is an important area within the engineering discipline with ¿extensive ¿applications in marine auxiliaries and machinery. The purpose of this unit ¿is to provide the ¿necessary knowledge and skills to understand the design ¿concepts and apply ¿thermodynamic principles in the safe operation of main and ¿auxiliary equipment. This unit ¿develops skills in managing the efficient operation of ¿such plants and machinery at the ¿management level of marine engineers.¿ The unit focuses on both thermodynamic problems and solving operational theory ¿relevant ¿to equipment for shipboard use. A student completing this unit will be able ¿to apply the ¿knowledge gained and understand the safe and economical operation ¿and management ¿of marine machinery.¿
This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set ¿out by ¿the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila ¿Amendments), and Table ¿A-AIII/2 of the STCW Code.¿

- ¿Apply knowledge of thermodynamic system properties and thermodynamic cycles to ¿thermodynamic systems in marine use¿
- ¿Demonstrate knowledge of various thermodynamic processes/cycles by relating them to ¿marine equipment and machineries like heat exchangers, air compressors, and steam ¿systems, combustion processes in internal combustion engines, refrigeration and air ¿conditioning systems¿
- ¿Solve thermodynamic set problems by using tools such as graphs, charts, tables and ¿formulae in the above-mentioned systems¿
- ¿Analyse thermodynamic system performance as applied to marine systems in order to ¿make decisions on effective management of such systems¿
