Introduction
This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills to plan manage and carry out engineering operations, maintenance, and repairs on propulsion system ancillaries on commercial vessels. This includes the design, operational principles, construction, safety, statutory requirements, trouble shooting, testing and etc.
This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the Maritime Training Package MAR60120, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-III/1 & A-III/2, of the STCW code.

Learning Outcomes
- Explain and demonstrate understanding of the functioning of relevant auxiliary systems, their safe operation and maintenance.
- Describe relevant systems with the aid of sketches to describe design features.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills to comply with the requirements of the maritime legislation pertaining to Marpol, Solas, STCW and Loadline conventions; and classification society requirements pertinent to senior marine engineers (at the management level).
- Apply knowledge gained to safely manage the operation and maintenance requirements of ship board auxiliary equipment and machinery, including deck machinery under both normal and problematic situations.
- Evaluate safe working practices in accordance with meeting legislative requirements, codes of practice, permits to work and environmental concerns (including LSA, FFE and machinery).
