Introduction
This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills to plan manage and carry out electrical and electronic engineering operations, maintenance, and repairs on generators, motors, transformers, and emergency power systems on commercial vessels. This includes the design, operational principles, construction, safety, statutory requirements, trouble shooting, testing and measurements, repairs and maintenance to enable safe and efficient operation of the electrical power generation, distribution and consumer machinery from a management level engineer. It also includes liaison with internal and external stakeholders on relevant matters.
This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the Maritime Training Package MAR60120, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-III/2 and A-III/6 of the STCW code.

- Analyse, troubleshoot, rectify and manage shipboard alternators and their excitation systems.
- Analyse, troubleshoot, rectify and manage shipboard AC induction and synchronous motors.
- Analyse concepts, design features and power electronic applications in electric propulsion.
- Explain the additional safety features in electrical systems on-board ships carrying hazardous cargo.
