Introduction
This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills to plan, manage and carry out engineering operations, maintenance, and repairs on main propulsion diesel engines and related ancillary systems on commercial vessels. This includes the design, operational principles, construction, safety, statutory requirements, trouble shooting, testing and measurements, repairs and maintenance to enable safe and efficient operation of large2-stroke slow speed and 4-stroke medium speed propulsion systems as a management level engineer. It also includes liaison with internal and external stakeholders.
This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the Maritime Training Package MAR60120, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-III/2 of the STCW code.

Learning Outcomes
- Examine methods of diesel engine component construction and assembly and justify the usage of components.
- Analyse crankshaft deflection data and justify conclusions made from this analysis.
- Evaluate and contrast methods of fuel injection, lubrication, cooling, turbocharging, starting, reversing and emission control, for diesel engines.
- Analyse common diesel engine combustion faults, including the usage of diagnostic equipment, and evaluate scavenging and pressure charging faults to operational and design parameters.
- Assess causes of uptake and scavenge fires, starting airline and crankcase explosions, and analyse methods to avoid or minimise thesesituations.
- Evaluate recent developments that have taken place in the design and construction of large marine diesel engines. Assess the advantages offered bythese developments in terms of economy, efficiency and environmental protection.
