Advanced Fire Fighting unit (JVD210)

Introduction

The short duration unit of study is intended to provide the student with the required knowledge, understanding and proficiency to prepare them to take command and establish control of fire fighting activities on board a vessel. In achieving the course outcomes the student will come to understand the requirement to prepare and train fire parties, maintain fire prevention procedures through the inspection, testing and fault reporting of equipment, and investigation and reporting and subsequent investigation of fire emergencies.

• Control firefighting operations onboard a vessel within a simulated environment.
• Organise and train shipboard fire response parties in a simulated environment.
• Inspect and service shipboard fire detection and or fire extinguishing equipment or systems in accordance with performance specifications and legislative requirements.
• Conducting a shipboard fire investigation based on a simulation scenario.

Teaching Pattern	This short course is delivered via a combination of face to face classroom and face to face practical demonstration of skills learnt as follows: 2 x 7.75 days face to face classroom lectures at Newnham campus 2 x 7.75 days face to face practical demonstration of skills learnt at Bell Bay fire ground
