Introduction
The design of this unit is based on the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Model Course 1.38 (Marine Environmental Awareness). The unit informs the participants of the complexity, diversity and functional significance of marine life and how this environment can be adversely impacted by maritime industry. This unit aims to create a general understanding of the importance of regulatory frameworks, the roles of major industry players and the need for compliance with IMO’s environmental protection Protocols and Conventions. The role of human element in protecting air and marine environments from pollution, through sound and sustainable shipping practices, is highlighted. This unit meet the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-II/1 and AII/2 of the STCW Code.
