Introduction

This unit provides students with the knowledge, skills and understanding of leadership and teamwork as appropriate to the Function: "Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the operational level". This unit meet the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the current Maritime Training Package, STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments), and Table A-II/1 of the STCW code.

  • Apply principles and practice of management theory to: • Investigate and arbitrate shipboard conflicts • Recognize the role of the leader in the workplace and the ability to motivate crew • Recognize the foundation of human behaviour and develop strategic working groups
  • Identify and develop measures to overcome barriers to effective communication.
  • Interpret national and international conventions, recommendations and legislations to implement health and safety, training and crew welfare in the workplace.
