While most students will complete their research project within a discipline of the University, some research projects will involve placement in an external organisation.
Enrolment only with the approval of the unit coordinator, and willingness of an academic staff member within CoSE to supervise the project. Students will not usually be considered without satisfactory completion of two relevant intermediate (2nd year) units.
Introduction
This unit consists of an independent research project in any of the disciplines of the College of Science and Engineering. It will involve approximately 130 hours planning, conducting, analysing and reporting on a research topic negotiated between the student and the supervising academic. To enroll, the student should first approach suitable supervisors and the Unit Coordinator to discuss projects. Enrolment is only possible with approval of the Unit Coordinator and supervisor. Students will not usually be considered without satisfactory completion of two relevant intermediate (2nd year) units.

- Plan a STEM research project in response to a negotiated problem
- Manage and effectively implement an appropriate research method for the selected project, through working safely and ethically under academic guidance
- Collect and accurately record scientific data
- Interpret scientific data logically and draw sound conclusions from those data
- Report scientific results, placing these into the context of the current state of scientific understanding and explaining their wider relevance, in the form of a formal scientific publication.
