STEM Work Integrated Learning unit (KAA315)

A work placement involves 70 hours, typically occurring between weeks 4 and 12 of the semester. Students must take the initiative to research, plan and secure a suitable professional work placement, with approval from the unit coordinator. It is recommended that interested students begin this process before the semester starts. More details regarding Professional Experience Placements in the College of Sciences and Engineering, including the necessary paperwork and the use of InPlace, are available here

Students cannot self-enrol in KAA315. The unit coordinator will instead enrol you in the unit after you have secured a professional experience placement. Refer to the PEP explanatory notes for KAA315 for further guidance.

Introduction

This unit provides an opportunity for you to undertake professional work experience in a broad range of science and engineering disciplines to support preparation for the world of work. This may take the form of work experience within the University, government agency or business within an appropriate laboratory or industrial setting or working in a small group for an organisation. Professional experience in the workplace aims to enable you to develop a sound understanding of the role and relevance of science and engineering in meeting business needs by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications.

The professional experience will help you gain an improved knowledge of organisations that employ science and engineering graduates, workplace culture and career pathways. You will develop a richer appreciation of the graduate qualities required for science and engineering professionals, participate in work teams, comply with norms and rules of the business, and recognise personal strengths and areas for development through personal reflection and feedback from your host organisation.

Teaching Pattern

The teaching pattern is flexible (equivalent to 13 weeks). The individual pattern of tuition is to be determined and agreed to by the workplace supervisor, coordinator and student.
