Introduction
This unit focuses on designing products for batch or multiple productions. Students are encouraged to develop individual and innovative approaches in the designing and making of contemporary, commercially viable items for manufacture. Workshop and studio activities will include student evaluations of the process for achieving design quality. Students will be required to submit design propositions to clients, consultants and authorities for their approval. Students will employ model-making to develop and test innovative design propositions and use digital media to prepare documentation and budget projections. The unit will provide experience in the efficiency of production, documentation, prototyping and marketability, and situate design within its historical and contemporary context. Learning by Making students will experience the characteristics of a ‘live’ project in a public place.
