Introduction
Exploration in data-rich environments, close to existing mines, has become a preferred method of increasing company resources in recent years. With that exploration philosophy in mind, this Masters-level unit is designed to bring students up to date with the latest techniques and analytical approaches applicable to exploration in data rich environments. The unit covers cutting-edge approaches to prospectivity analysis, geophysics, analysis of exploration geochemical data, hyperspectral mineral analysis and 3D visualisation, using real data from world-class mineralised districts. Exploration in Brownfield Terrains is available as both an OPTIONAL unit in the Mastery block of the Master of Economic Geology degree or as one of three CORE OPTION capstone coursework units (two selected) that may be taken during the Research/Project (Capstone) block of the degree. This unit is delivered in two (one 6-day and one 5-day) intensive study blocks, which involve approximately 35 hrs of lectures and 45 hrs of practical and project work. A further 105 hrs individual study is completed in the four weeks prior to, and the four weeks between, the two intensive study blocks.

Learning Outcomes
- Appraise drivers for, and limitations on, brownfields exploration success (e.g. corporate philosophy and strategy, the amount, distribution and quality of existing mineral exploration data, application of new ore deposit models or detection tools, etc)
- Integrate geological, geochemical and geophysical datasets to detect mineralized domains in brownfields settings
- Evaluate exploration potential using existing geological, geochemical and geophysical datasets and informed by economic, social and environmental considerations.
- Evaluate previous brownfields exploration strategies for a mining district (or deposit type) by researching published literature and other publicly available information (e.g. mining company websites)
- Explain interpretations of the prospectivity of brownfields environments to an audience of academic and industry peers.

Teaching
| Teaching Pattern | This unit involves approximately 35 hrs of lectures, 45 hrs of practicals and project work during the 6- and 5-day intensive study blocks. A brownfields case study report/literature review (40 hrs) and a self-paced Leapfrog Geo tutorial (20 hrs) are undertaken in the weeks leading up to the first intensive session. A further 45 hrs of project work is completed in the four weeks between the intensive delivery blocks (~11 hrs/week). Reviewing lectures and the associated reading material involves a further 5.5 hrs per week over ~10 weeks. |
