Thesis Project - Part B unit (KEA725)

Introduction

This unit constitutes the second half of the 50 credit point Masters of Economic Geology research thesis. In this unit, students (i) complete collection, analysis and interpretation of data for their research project, (ii) make findings and draw conclusions based on the research, and (iii) discuss the relevance of their findings to the minerals industry and other stake holders. Background to the research, the aims and methods, the new data and analysis, and findings are ultimately presented in the form of a written thesis. Completed theses should be between 20,000 and 30,000 words, or 80 to 120 pages in length (excluding appendices). The completed thesis is submitted in electronic form (either pdf or Word document) along with any digital appendices. A hardbound copy of the thesis is not required. The final mark and grade for the thesis is recorded against both KEA724 and KEA725. IMPORTANT NOTE: Students undertaking the research thesis enrol in KEA725 (Thesis Project - Part B) after completing KEA724 (Thesis Project - Part A). It is not possible to self-enrol in KEA725, which requires approval of the unit coordinator. KEA725 enrolment is the point at which students decide whether or not to complete the 50 point research thesis. If a student is enrolled in KEA725, an interim completion (IC) is reported for KEA724. Not proceeding to KEA725 triggers reporting of a final result for KEA724, which will be a passing mark and grade where the student has satisfied the requirements for KEA724, and a failing grade (NN or AN) where they have not. If a student decides not to continue to KEA725 (and a final result for KEA724 has been awarded), but subsequently changes their mind, they may only enrol in KEA725, with the approval of both the unit coordinator and ADLT (CoSE) (i.e. KEA724 result is changed to IC). The Thesis Project units (KEA724 and KEA725) are completed for the Research/Project Block of the degree and are compulsory (CORE) for fulltime students but OPTIONAL for part-time students. The total volume of student learning for KEA725 should be between 260 and 300 hrs.
