This unit forms the capstone of the Sustainability Major that can be completed in the BSc or in any other undergraduate degree that provides general elective space. It can also be taken as a stand-alone elective in any discipline.
The unit is offered through off-campus enrolment (i.e., online delivery) only. Students are able to choose whether to attend weekly seminars (synchronous delivery) or watch recordings in their own time (asynchronous delivery). All students are required to participate in team-based assessment, including attending (synchronous) team meetings, either in timetabled workshops or at a time of a team's choosing.
Introduction
The most complex and important challenges facing societies today bring together concerns about environmental, political, economic, and cultural sustainability. Guided by an interdisciplinary teaching team with expertise in life sciences, social sciences, and business, this unit enables you to investigate how you and others can act as agents of change for sustainability. You will work individually and in collaborative teams to analyse root problems, develop sustainable transition plans, and communicate persuasively with diverse target audiences. Recognising the vital importance of just and democratic action to achieving sustainability, you will take account of Indigenous perspectives, diverse values, social power, and your own positioning. Global sustainability challenges will be grounded in diverse contexts from Tasmania and around the world. Drawing inspiration from the stories of influential change agents, you will be empowered to advocate and catalyse practical change through organisational, professional, civic, and personal action. - Critically assess the roles, values, and practices of change agents and integrate environmental, political, cultural, and economic knowledge of sustainability transitions in diverse settings and across scales.
- Analyse a global sustainability challenge and design a sustainability transition plan, individually and in teams, outlining actions for diverse change agents in a specific context.
- Communicate critically, persuasively, reflectively, and ethically, to investigate, collaborate and advocate for sustainability transitions.
