BICT students need to get permission from the unit coordinator to enrol in the online offering. The online offering is primarily reserved for students enrolled in courses that are available online (e.g. Diploma of ICT Professional Practice, Undergraduate Certificate in ICT Professional Practice). Online students will need to attend online tutorials.
Introduction
This unit introduces students to fundamentals of distributed networked environments, primarily focusing on wired networks but students will examine some of the different approaches in wireless networks. It provides knowledge of internetworking standards and understanding of the networking architecture, technology and operation. This unit will provide students with an understanding of: OSI model framework; TCP/IP, common internet risks and requirements; operation of encryption techniques; digital signatures; public key infrastructure; authentication and non-repudiation. Additionally, students will be required to analyse and assess recent developments in ICT security technologies related to networking. Completing this unit will provide you with the background knowledge and practical experience to go on to obtain micro credentials in the Cisco CCNA 1 “Introduction to Networks” Course, which is the first of three modules in the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) industry certification.

| Teaching Pattern | On-Campus Melbourne and Sydney teaching arrangements may differ and will be advised by your teaching team. On-Line teaching arrangements may differ and will be advised by your teaching team. An online tutorial will be available for online students with special circumstances including students enrolled in an ICT Diploma course (special permission is required to enrol in the online tutorial - it is not available for on-campus students). On-Campus enrolments in Hobart and Launceston: Lectures: 2 hrs/wk - online via Zoom, all students are expected to attend each week, commencing in week 1, or elect to complete the self-study materials on their own each week. |
