Students must complete the following compliance documentation before the start of the placement and before census date: 1. Safe to Practice declaration (Schedule A); 2. Medical Check form (Schedule B, if required); 3. Placement Work Plan (Schedule C); and 4. the online UTAS Safety and Wellbeing Induction for Students.
Introduction
This unit aims to provide you with practical professional experience and improve your awareness of the issues associated with professional practice. In this unit you will undertake a supervised, experiential learning opportunity in which you will apply your acquired knowledge and skills. This professional experience could take the form of an industry placement with an industry supervisor. This experience will give you the opportunity to consolidate and improve your professional capabilities. The specific tasks you will undertake will be determined in discussions between yourself, your supervisor, and the Unit Coordinator. This will ensure appropriate standards are maintained and the tasks align to your career goals. A guided, personal enquiry, self-managed approach will be adopted, accompanied by web-based resources to direct student reflective learning to inform and improve future professional practice. Over the duration of the professional experience, the Unit Coordinator will liaise closely with yourself and the supervisor.
Your placement will be completed in an assigned role over a minimum of 32 full-time equivalent days. Work hours and scheduling (for example, two and a half days per week over up to thirteen weeks) must be negotiated with your approved placement provider. Placements may occur in a range of environments, including government departments, industry organisations, small-to-medium enterprises, or within the University.
While support is available to identify placements, you are responsible for securing a placement that meets the unit’s requirements. If you have not obtained a placement or completed required compliance documentation by census date you will be withdrawn from the unit.
Placements are competitive. There may not be placements for all who seek a position.
