Introduction
The unit explores advanced contemporary techniques including molecular methods and functional assays used for the detection, identification and characterisation of microorganisms from either host or environmental systems. Techniques explored include polymerase chain reaction (standard and quantitative), microscopy, flow cytometry, enzyme/immune fluorescence assays, genomics (sequencing, annotation), rapid tests, and biosensor technology. This extends to culture independent analysis and genome-wide techniques including genetic manipulation and screening, shot gun sequencing, metagenomics, expression studies (gene and protein), and comparative genomics. This unit also encompasses strategies for the preparation, presentation, and effective communication of scientific and technical information.
The laboratory classes feature a series of linked activities with the opportunity to use a range of hands on and bioinformatic techniques to study the function and characteristics of microorganisms. Tutorials will include critical discussion of practical class lab results, research ethics and integrity, regulatory frameworks for laboratories as well as discussion of strategies used in constructing and presenting scientific reports, both oral and written.
