Ecosystem Microbiology unit (KLA398)

The unit will form part of a microbiology major in the BSc degree.

Introduction

The unit covers the principles of environmental microbiology and microbial ecology: that is, the behaviour of microorganisms in ecosystems and how they can affect the world around us. A focus is placed on the role of microorganisms in major ecosystems including soil and the oceans. You will learn about microbial processes in anaerobic systems as well as how microorganisms interact and communicate. You will also learn about the application of microorganisms and microbial processes in ecosystems and will explore the benefits that can bring as well as the problems it can cause. On campus laboratory work is an important part of your learning in this unit and you will have the opportunity to conduct a small research project within the laboratory sessions.
