Introduction
This unit equips students with the skills they need to conduct a detailed analysis of an industry and use this analysis to identify and communicate potential market or technical innovations with a variety of target audiences. These target audiences might be primary producers, processors or other actors in the value chain. It will provide the foundations to access relevant financial, marketing, production, and human resource management information to aid in decision making, technology adoption and management of risk. Through case-studies students will gain an appreciation for reviewing the economic, political and market factors that influence the way agricultural industries develop, by considering the industry’s past trends, demand-supply mechanics, and future outlook. Using these analysis techniques, students will develop an understanding of how the theory and practice of extension can influence adoption. It will consider the role of adult education, barriers to participation and how research and demonstration can influence early adopters.
