Pasture and Animal Science unit (KLA615)

Location: Hobart

Introduction

The unit introduces the science underpinning pasture production and management and the link between pasture or other feedstuffs on animal digestion, feed and nutrient utilisation and productive performance. In the practical classes, students are given the opportunity to perform pasture assessment and experience the methods used to determine the quality of feeds. The practical sessions provide students with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge about animal health and nutrition to commercial production scenarios.

Learning Outcomes

  • Classify the botanical composition of a local pasture sward to at least genus level
  • Evaluate the relationship between forage and fodder crop composition and nutrient supply with respect to ruminant nutrition.
  • Analyse data from scientific literature and experimental data in the area of pasture and animal science.
  • Apply the key elements of sustainable grazing systems to support and/or improve animal production.
