Grant Writing For Scientific Research unit (KLA708)

Introduction

Obtaining project funding is critical for a successful career in research and grant writing is an art form. In this unit, higher degree research students will gain an insight into the research funding environment in Australia. Different types of grants (including projects and fellowships) will be discussed and the process of preparing an application will be practiced in several steps. Skills will be developed in identifying relevant research topics, appropriate funding bodies and developing project budgets. The major assessment will allow those skills to be practiced through development of a research proposal for a small project (aligned with your higher degree research project), such as would be submitted to a research funding agency. The proposal will concisely introduce background for the proposed project, including aims and objectives. The expected outcomes and benefits of the project will be developed, along with experimental design and methods and a costing of resources required. How the results will be communicated to stakeholders is an important part of all grant proposals. A short oral presentation of a 100-word project summary will enable feedback to help develop the grant proposal.
