Introduction
This third year, first-semester unit continues the development of crucial mathematical ideas, in particular providing core knowledge in abstract algebra and real analysis. The focus is an appreciation of the unity of algebraic structures appearing across many areas of mathematics and developing a deep understanding of the real number system and its completeness property. This unit is compulsory for the Mathematics major of the BSc.

Learning Outcomes
- Apply fundamental concepts of abstract algebra and analysis, through formulating simple mathematical proofs.
- Identify and develop solutions to applied problems, using abstract algebra and analysis.
- Apply logic, reasoning and a variety of communication skills to present mathematical arguments in a clear and precise way.
- Synthesise the relationships between fundamental algebraic structures, such as rings, groups and fields, and recognise their appearance in a broad range of mathematical contexts.
- Analyse the conceptual and theoretical fundamentals of sets, sequences, series and functions in the real number system and apply this knowledge to determine their properties, such as compactness, convergence, completeness, and boundedness.
