Catalysis and Advanced Inorganic Chemistry unit (KRA342)

Location: Hobart

Introduction

This unit builds upon the basic understanding of inorganic chemistry from level 200 and introduces more advanced topics. Our particular focus on the application to the study of advanced inorganic topics including catalysis and sustainable reaction processes. The topics will include bonding and structure, catalytic reactions, applications to synthesis and industrial chemistry. Laboratory work will cover aspects of organometallic synthesis and catalytic reactions chemistry. KRA342 is one of four 300-level units required in the chemistry major NOTE: This unit is intended for all students majoring in chemistry along with those with interests in the physical sciences, biotechnology, medical and biomedical research, life sciences, earth sciences, Antarctic science, marine science, and pharmaceutical science areas. The content of this unit has also been structured so that it serves many other study plans within the BSc.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe, rationalise and predict the structure, chemical properties, overall outcomes and mechanistic pathways of metal-based systems using advanced molecular orbital theory and periodic table trends.
  • Analyse, interpret and predict spectral data and evidence for reaction mechanisms and metal-ligand bonding by determining and differentiating the structure of molecules and compounds.
  • Demonstrate laboratory chemistry procedures, characterisation and risk assessments for organic and inorganic synthesis and isolation of compounds safely and to a competent standard.
  • Communicate experimental outcomes and relevant chemistry concepts using standard conventions
