Advanced Analytical Techniques unit (KRA344)

This unit is intended for all students majoring in chemistry along with those with interests in the physical sciences; biotechnology; medical and biomedical research; life sciences; earth sciences; Antarctic science; marine science; and pharmaceutical science.  Students who would like to do this unit but have a timetable problem with either lectures or laboratory work should consult the Unit Coordinator.

Introduction

Analytical Chemistry is a branch of chemistry that deals with the identification of compounds and mixtures (qualitative analysis) or the determination of the proportions of the constituents (quantitative analysis). It is important for ensuring the safety of our food and pharmaceuticals, the quality of our water, and our health and safety. This unit will be of importance to all scientists relying on the use of chemical information to answer questions in their field of endeavour. The material concentrates on giving a sound foundation to the theory and application of modern instrumental techniques, reinforced through hands-on use in the laboratory program. Topics within this unit are selected from: chromatographic separation techniques, including chromatography and electrophoresis; mass spectrometry, and portable and miniaturised analytical systems. KRA344 is one of four 300-level core units in the Chemistry Major.

Teaching

Teaching Pattern

Teaching activities will occur in Hobart with weekly face-to-face workshops (12 x 2 hrs) and laboratory sessions (10 x 4 hrs).  Prior to each workshop, recorded content and reading material will be delivered through MyLO (approximately 40 hrs) that will serve as a basis for clarification, expansion and extensions through discussion and problem solving.
