Introduction
The honours program in chemistry is a one-year course, comprising broad training associated with a research-based project and some advanced coursework. The whole program is conducted under the KRA426 - 429 (for BSc) or KRA438 - 441 (for BBiotechMedRes) unit codes. The Honours program aims to enable students to define and solve problems relating to their speciality and to conduct research in the field. The Chemistry Discipline produces a booklet each year describing the projects available. Approval may also be given for joint courses of study between Chemistry and another discipline. Honours may be commenced in either Semester 1 or 2. The Research Project component can be in one or more of physical or inorganic or organic or analytical chemistry or chemical education, or an approved sub-field of chemistry. The research project consists principally of research under supervision by a member/s of staff as approved by the Discipline Leader, Assoc. Prof. Jason Smith. Honours students are afforded most of the privileges of the staff and postgraduate students within the Chemistry Building to conduct their Research Project, including afterhours access, office and laboratory space, and the research instrumentation facilities in the Discipline and the Central Science Laboratory. In addition to the Research Project, students are introduced to the essential tools required to effectively plan, and subsequently carryout and present their Research Project through a number of formative assessment tasks early in the program. This includes access to the resources and supervision required to research the background needed to prepare a Literature Review and formulate a Research Plan that is then presented as the Introductory Research Seminar. General safety and workplace requirements are emphasised in initial training and practiced throughout the Research Project. Honours graduates possess the skills and qualifications to progress to higher degrees (e.g. Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy) or to enter science and technology industries. In regard to employment, the minimum qualification in many science industries is a BSc(Hons) degree. Honours graduates are eligible for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and chemical societies from around the world.
