Laboratory Techniques and Scientific Reporting unit (KRA521)

Introduction

This unit consolidates theoretical and practical skills required for the study of chemistry at a Masters level. Students will gain hands-on experience through a number of synthetic and analytical laboratory experiments, and will gain familiarity with risk assessment procedures, glassware handling, synthetic chemistry techniques, isolation and purification of chemicals, and modern instrumentation methods. The unit will also expose students to modern scientific writing conventions and laboratory report writing. Students will be asked to reflect on their laboratory sessions to highlight areas of strengths and weaknesses to be addressed during the unit. This unit is intended to consolidate students’ prior knowledge of chemistry while broadening their laboratory and scientific writing skills and will prepare Masters of Applied Science students for further postgraduate study in Chemistry.
