Introduction
The Advanced Analytical Techniques unit is a specialised module within the broader field of analytical chemistry, designed to immerse students in cutting-edge techniques and applications for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Techniques that will be covered have applications including ensuring the safety of our food and pharmaceuticals, the quality of our water, and our health and safety. The unit concentrates on giving a sound foundation to the theory and application of modern instrumental techniques, reinforced through extensive hands-on use in the laboratory program. Topics within this unit are selected from: chromatographic separation techniques, including chromatography and electrophoresis; mass spectrometry, and portable and miniaturised analytical systems. These advanced methods, instrumentation, and theoretical concepts, equip students with the expertise needed to tackle complex analytical challenges in diverse scientific and industrial settings and prepare them for advanced methods in the Mastery components of the Master of Chemistry.

| Teaching Pattern | Teaching activities will include weekly face-to-face workshops (12 x 2 hrs) and laboratory sessions (10 x 4 hrs). Prior to each workshop, recorded content and reading material will be delivered through MyLO (approximately 40 hrs) that will serve as a basis for clarification, expansion and extensions through discussion and problem solving. |
