Introduction

Spatial information is fundamental to the study of marine and Antarctic science, providing critical insights into these dynamic environments, how people interact with them, and the threats they face. Examples of this information include the distribution of a key marine habitat, sea ice extent, point sightings of marine mammals, aquaculture zones, maritime boundaries, and vessel tracks of fishing vessels. This information together enables the visualization and analysis of marine environments, and Antarctica, supporting scientific research, the sustainable management of marine resources and conservation.

In this unit, you will dive into the complexities and opportunities of working with spatial data in the dynamic 3D marine underwater environment and the vast, icy expanses of Antarctica. You will be exposed to real-world challenges, such as dealing with the inherent limitations and uncertainty of collecting and communicating spatial data in these either remote or often hidden environments, and dynamic spatial boundaries. By understanding these unique aspects, you will also gain insights into how this altered sense of place shapes our appetite for ocean exploration, our perception, and the decisions we make regarding these environments.

This unit will introduce you to the basics of geospatial science, and you will learn to manipulate and interpret spatial information using Geographic Information System (GIS) software, transforming data into meaningful insights that can inform scientists, industry and policymakers. By the end of this unit, you will have developed critical thinking skills on the sources, types, and applications of spatial information in marine and Antarctic science, along with basic practical hands-on skills to manipulate, process, visualize, and effectively communicate this information.
