Fishing Technology unit (KSM601)

2027 Unit information is now available. View 2027 unit information

Location: Hobart

In this unit, you will explore the biological and physical factors that shape the design of fishing gears and methods, and their operation in fisheries both in Australia and globally. A special focus will be on the identification and mitigation of fishing’s negative impacts on the marine environment. You will be introduced to the process of collecting experimental fishing data in the field, and the unit will equip you with the quantitative skills necessary to assess the selectivity of various fishing methods.

Introduction

The unit will introduce the student to the factors that influence the design of a range of commercial fishing gears and methods as well as the fishing vessels that are required for their effective operation to produce high-quality seafood. Special emphasis is placed on identifying options to reduce any negative impacts of fishing on the marine environment and to promote responsible fishing practices within the fishing industry.
