Introduction

Evidence-based decision making is a crucial skill in many areas of employment. Just as critical is being able to quickly and accurately assimilate available evidence and form sound conclusions that can be articulated to a range of stakeholders. This unit will develop knowledge and skills that are oriented to a graduate looking to find employment in a field related to marine and Antarctic science. The pattern of teaching for the unit will include a mix of lectures, workshops, and interactions with professionals in relevant fields. The focus will be on developing student’s abilities to synthesise information from a range of sources and use that to build coherent plans for solving open issues in marine and Antarctic Science.

  • Critically evaluate opportunities and skills needed to be successful in the field of marine and Antarctic science or similar field.
  • Develop a coherent argument to support a program of work in marine and Antarctic Science based on evidence available in published literature, research data or other appropriate sources of information.
  • Plan a program of work investigating an identified problem or question in marine and Antarctic science within constraints imposed by time, money and technical resources.
  • Communicate research concepts and findings in marine and Antarctic science in a logical manner, in a variety of written and oral forms commonly used by professionals in the field.
