A student placement, also known as Professional Experience Placement (PEP) or internship, is a subset of work-integrated learning (WIL) where students are supervised and/or assessed by a third party in a workplace setting.
Placements are embedded in units of study to support learning, employability and professional course accreditation requirements. Through fostering quality relationships and curriculum co-design with stakeholders external to the typical classroom environment, UTAS strive to support intentional, rewarding and safe experiences for students. Policy and procedure are derived from the Professional Experience Placement Policy and the Professional Experience Placement Procedure.
GenAI and PEP
Although generative AI can be used to support your studies, there are also times when it may not be appropriate. Using generative AI tools to develop the content of your assignments means significantly compromising the development of key skills for success at university including creativity, critical thinking and reflective analysis.
You should also consider concerns related to the use of AI tools such as privacy and intellectual property and the accuracy, reliability and currency of its generated outputs. This is particularly important to your host organisation. Students are expected to understand the implications of GenAI in their placement context and when, or if at all, GenAI is permitted to be applied while in a placement context. Unapproved, inappropriate, or unacknowledged use of genAI within your unit or placement host may be considered as dishonest or unfair behaviour, and therefore a breach of academic integrity.
Please note, enrolments are available in any location, including if you are studying online. To discuss the range of possibilities and to enrol you will need to complete an application and acceptance process and consult with the Business Placement Coordinator.
Considerations for International Students
It is important to be aware that for some visa conditions, the Business Placement units (BAA321, BAA322, BAA323, BAA708, BAA709) and the associated applied placement hours (excluding workshops and scheduled teaching arrangements) may count toward a students 'work limitations' under certain visa arrangements. Students undertaking a Business Placement may be captured under this interpretation, independent if the placement is paid or unpaid. For more information please check the Home Affairs website. If you feel this may affect you, we recommend that you contact or arrange a time with the International Student Advisor (ISA) team for specific advice.
Introduction
This unit is available in a number of undergraduate degrees offered across the University.
Students undertake a work-based project with a public, private, or for-purpose organisation. Business Placements connect students’ university knowledge with real-world, industry-established projects and tasks. This authentic and practical learning experience enhances employability and provides students with opportunities to network within industry and explore career pathways while studying.
The unit is highly accessible and designed to fit alongside students’ existing study commitments. It requires just one day per week over the course of the semester, making it manageable with other academic and personal responsibilities.
Placements are matched to each student’s course, interests, and career aspirations. A designated placement mentor is assigned to support student learning throughout the experience. This is an advanced-level unit that integrates work and learning, comprising 80 hours of applied learning and approximately 40 hours of coursework and teaching.
