Introduction

No organisation operates in a vacuum. Developing an appreciation of global issues and the capacity to determine regional or local consequences for organisations is imperative for good leadership and appropriate management. Leaders, therefore, must be cognisant of contemporary issues that are or will impact the organisation, its people and the communities in which they operate. Leaders must make informed decisions as to the most appropriate response to mitigate risk, leverage opportunity and maintain relevance. As part of a suite of units examining leadership and the central function of organisational capability development the premise of this unit is to generate curiosity about global issues and local consequence for leaders. It aims to connect current affairs to the development of capability to respond appropriately to identified or possible consequences. The unit encourages you to think more expansively about contemporary issues, particularly those on a global scale but with local or regional impact utilising learning generated from other units in the Leadership and Organisational Capability suite.

Learning Outcomes

• Review and critique organisational responses to current challenges faced by organisations in local, national and global contexts.
• Critically analyse the relevance and effectiveness of reported leadership behaviours and approaches in responding to current internal and external challenges.
• Generate and communicate practical responses to contemporary business challenges by melding relevant extant theory, non-traditional and context-based approaches associated with leadership and organisational capability.
• Communicate well reasoned arguments utilising an academic writing style and appropriate referencing.
