Introduction
This unit provides students with the comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to plan, manage, and execute maintenance and operational tasks for marine diesel engines, steam systems, and auxiliary machinery on commercial vessels and related platforms. Key areas covered include marine diesel engines, auxiliary boilers, steam plants, pumping, refrigeration, and other marine engineering systems.
Students will learn to liaise with shore-based sub-contractors, develop maintenance schedules, troubleshoot issues, perform measurements and monitor, disassemble and reassemble components, and commission systems whilst adhering to safety and statutory requirements.
This unit meets the knowledge, understanding, and proficiency standards set out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments), Table A-III/1 of the STCW Code, and relevant AMSA Marine Orders.

Learning Outcomes
- Comply with WHS/OHS, Safety Management Systems, and environmental standards by performing risk assessments and safely using tools and equipment during sh ipboard maintenance and repairs.
- Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on main and auxiliary machinery and marine systems in compliance with standard workplace safety procedures and with required documentation completed before commencing activities.
- Complete repairs by coordinating complex repair tasks, communicating with team members, and utilising available resources under safety protocols.
