Aboriginal Entry Application Process

Do you identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander?

The College of Health and Medicine is committed to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff and communities to achieve their education aspirations.

If you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, you may be eligible to apply for admission into the Medicine (BMedScMD) program through our Aboriginal Entry Application Process (AEAP).

Aboriginal applicants are encouraged to apply through the Aboriginal Entry Application Process in addition to completing the standard University of Tasmania application.

The Aboriginal Entry Application Process has more flexible options to meet entry criteria for BMedScMD, a UCAT score is not required.

HECS Scholarships and other Scholarships are also available for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students enrolling at the University of Tasmania.

The University of Tasmania Riawunna Centre also provides services and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, with walk-in advice at each Campus.

Applications for the BMedScMD must be received by 11:59 pm AEST on 30 September 2023. Late applications will not be accepted.


If you are applying to University from Year 12:

Aboriginal Year 12 students are advised to apply for entry to the Medicine program (BMedScMD) through the Tasmanian School of Medicine Aboriginal Application Process - Application Form Aboriginal Entry Application Process - Application Form  PDF 986.2 KB.

The regular domestic student application process also needs to be completed.

Pre-requisites:

  • Completion of the Aboriginal Entry Application Process - Application Form, including:
  • Confirmation of Eligibility for Aboriginal Entry Application Process
  • Personal supporting statement
  • Year 12 English and Chemistry or equivalent.
    • Applicants without the chemistry pre-requisite, but who are otherwise eligible, can demonstrate competence by satisfactory completion of a University foundation unit in chemistry (Introduction to Chemistry  KRA161) before commencement of medicine. Prerequisite subjects (or equivalent) must have been completed within the last five years before application.
  • Competitive ATAR score
  • Interview with representative(s) of the Medicine Admissions Committee

Please note, UCAT is not required for applications under the Aboriginal Entry Application Process. When asked for your UCAT ANZ number please enter NA (if you have not sat the UCAT).


If you are applying into University as a Non-school Leaver:

Aboriginal non-school leavers are advised to apply for entry to the Medicine program (BMedScMD) through the School of Medicine Aboriginal Application Process - Application Form Aboriginal Entry Application Process - Application Form PDF 986.2 KB.

The regular domestic student application process also needs to be completed.

Pre-requisites:

  • Confirmation of Eligibility for Aboriginal Entry Application Process
  • Personal supporting statement
  • Qualifications and experience in a health-related field (such as an Aboriginal health worker or nursing)
  • Referee report
  • Year 12 English and Chemistry, or equivalent.
    • This may be demonstrated through TCE, undergraduate study and/or workplace experience. Applicants without the chemistry pre-requisite, but who are otherwise eligible, can demonstrate competence by satisfactory completion of a University foundation unit in chemistry (Introduction to Chemistry KRA161) before commencement of medicine. Prerequisite subjects (or equivalent) must have been completed within the last five years before application.
  • Interview with representative(s) of the Medicine Admissions Committee
