Two students from the University of Tasmania will each spend a semester studying in the Indo-Pacific after receiving a 2022 New Colombo Plan Scholarship.

The scholarship provides financial support for high achieving students to undertake up to 19 months of immersive, international study within the Indo-Pacific Region.

These students have been awarded New Colombo Plan Scholarships:

Pearl Mitchell, Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science
Pearl intends to undertake a semester of studies, with a combined language program, at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. She will also undertake in an internship at the Locally Managed Marine Area Network (LMMAN).

Madeleine Webster, Bachelor of Arts and Laws

Madeleine intends to undertake a year of study, including a proposed legal research internship and an internship in a law firm specialising in international private mediation. She will undertake a language program and will attend the National University of Singapore.

These students will be joined by six continuing University students from 2020 and 2021 who were unable to participate in overseas study due to ongoing disruptions caused by COVID-19. There are 125 students from around Australia beginning their New Colombo Scholarships in 2022.

Pearl Mitchell and Madeleine Webster have received the prestigious New Columbo Plan Scholarship for 2022.

Since the Scholarship began in 2014, 28 University of Tasmania students, including four Fellows have been successful in receiving the prestigious award, undertaking more than 30 semesters of study within 10 countries throughout the Indo-Pacific.

The two new recipients received their scholarships in a special online event attended by His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley, Governor-General of Australia.

The New Colombo Plan is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting undergraduate students to study and undertake internships in the region.

Along with this scholarship the New Colombo Plan program provides funding for Australian universities to develop short-term programs that enable students to gain an international experience, while acting as an avenue to further support internationally focused teaching and learning initiatives.
