Australian Music: performance, creation, technology

About the research project

Proposals are sought for PhD projects that relate to Australian music performance, creation, and technology. Candidates are expected to have a higher degree in the appropriate specialisation, or equivalent significant experience in performance, composition and/or improvisation, music technology or songwriting. The project proposal in music will typically comprise a practice-led portfolio with an accompanying exegesis. The portfolio will be a series of performances or works or creative works. The exegesis will contextualise the performances or creative works and focuses directly on an aspect of music relevant to the candidate’s research interests and specialisation.

Candidates will work with supervisory teams formed in response to your project proposal and based on the research expertise within the school.

Alternate location

On campus for those based in campus, mixed delivery of online and in person for candidates based interstate.

Funding

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:

• a living allowance stipend funded by University of Tasmania of $34,315 per annum for 3.5 years (PhD) or 2 years (Master by Research)
• a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)

A tuition fee offset may be offered to eligible international applicants following competitive assessment

Eligibility

Applicants should review the Higher Degree by Research minimum entry requirements.

Additional eligibility criteria specific to this project/scholarship:

• Applications are open to applicants from the Music discipline.
• Applicants will have a minimum of a higher degree in Music, or equivalent exceptional experience in the specialisation for which they are applying.
• English language score must be above minimum entry requirements for this project.
• Applicants should present a portfolio of creative works and a project proposal as part of the application.

Selection criteria

The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.

1. Select your project, and check that you meet the eligibility and selection criteria, including citizenship;
2. Contact Doctor Damien Kingston to discuss your suitability and the project's requirements; and
3. In your application:
   • Copy and paste the title of the project from this advertisement into your application. If you don’t correctly do this your application may be rejected.
   • Submit a signed supervisory support form, a CV including contact details of 2 referees and your project research proposal.
4. Apply prior to 1 October 2026.
