Applied approaches to improving dairy calf health and antimicrobial stewardship

About the research project

This PhD project will investigate applied approaches to improving dairy calf health with a focus on antimicrobial stewardship in calf rearing systems. Early‑life enteric and respiratory disease are major drivers of antimicrobial use in dairy production, and the project will examine how disease management can be improved without compromising animal welfare or productivity.

The research will adopt an applied and translational approach, with specific experimental components refined over time. The work may explore emerging therapeutic strategies and/or alternative delivery approaches within commercial‑relevant systems.

The project is suited to a domestic PhD candidate with interests in animal health, veterinary or agricultural science, and will be based within an established research group with access to livestock research facilities.

Funding

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:

• a living allowance stipend funded by University of Tasmania of $34,315 per annum for 3.5 years
• a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
• a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)

Eligibility

Additional eligibility criteria specific to this project/scholarship:

• Hold a relevant Honours degree or Masters by Research, or demonstrate equivalent research experience
• Have a background in a relevant discipline, such as animal science, veterinary science, agricultural science, biological sciences, or a related field
• Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary research team
• Meet the University of Tasmania’s PhD admission requirements
• Hold a current driver’s licence, as field‑based work will form part of the project
• Be willing and able to be based in north‑west Tasmania

Selection criteria

The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.

Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:

• Experience with livestock systems, animal health, or applied agricultural research
• Interest in antimicrobial resistance or animal welfare
• Willingness to undertake periodic on‑farm and field‑based research activities
