About the research project
This project aims to develop and analyse advanced mathematical models and algorithms for prediction and decision making in complex environments, for problems in queueing theory, health systems, and population processes. Models with time-dependent behaviour such as cyclic parameters (to model seasonal factors) or stochastic delay (to model delayed response to the environmental factors) are required to analyse these complex systems. Research will focus on building on the recent advances in mathematics to generate new theoretical results, algorithms and numerical methods for unsolved problems in mathematics.

Funding
Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:
- a living allowance stipend funded by University of Tasmania of $34,315 per annum for 3.5 years
- a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
A tuition fee offset may be offered to eligible international applicants following competitive assessment

Selection criteria
The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.
Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:
- Demonstrated experience in independently conducting mathematical research.
- High-level analytical skills.
- High-level academic skills.
- Academic background in mathematical modelling, optimisation, theory and applications.
- High-level coding skills.
Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:
- Background in the theory and application of Markovian decision processes.
