About the research project
Japan’s primary industry for centuries has been tourism, with a firm focus on Japanese nationals making pilgrimages, both sacred and profane, to key temples, land marks, or famous restaurants. Authors and poets such as Bakin and Basho famously wrote their way along the Tokaido Road, cementing the hallmarks of the fantasy travel genre.
This project is designed for applicants with a background in Japanese language studies or Asian studies. The project could examine aspects of Japanese literature and popular culture through a close reading of Japanese literary works including anime and manga, through a Japanese>English translation project, or through a study of screen media such as cinema or television. Consideration may also be given to popular culture driven tourism and pilgrimages between Japan and Australia. The final project will be developed with the candidate in a manner that reflects their particular background and interests. Candidates will be supported by experts working in literature, material culture, gender studies, translation, and popular culture.

I am flexible with the location of this research project - either on campus in Hobart or Off Campus as needed for the nominated candidates' needs.

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:
- a living allowance stipend funded by University of Tasmania of $34,315 per annum for 3.5 years
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
A tuition fee offset may be offered to eligible international applicants following competitive assessment

The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.
Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:
Background in Japanese literature or cultural studies or related degree.
Strong proficiency in Japanese language.
