About the research project
This PhD project examines strategies to address developing urban stream syndrome issues through a geomorphic lens. Using the mountain‑derived rivulets of the greater Hobart region as case studies, you will compare fluvial geomorphic function and capability between upland and lowland reaches that transition into hard‑engineered, channelised urban and peri‑urban streams. As urban density intensifies, many of these rivulets are increasingly confined, straightened, or redirected, reducing geomorphic and hydrodynamic functionality and heightening vulnerability to localised flash flooding during extreme rainfall events and high‑energy mountain runoff.
The project will investigate where and how geomorphic reconstruction could improve stream function, restore elements of natural sinuosity, and enhance flood attenuation while remaining compatible with existing urban constraints. Using a combination of in situ field investigations, geospatial analysis, and numerical modelling, the research will assess sediment budgets, bankfull conditions, channel confinement, and watershed connectivity across the case study rivulet–urban stream systems.
A review of established river and bank restoration techniques will inform feasible fluvial engineering and nature‑based intervention options appropriate to Hobart’s steep, short‑catchment settings. Geospatial analyses will be used to estimate maximum achievable horizontal sinuosity and floodplain interaction where channel straightening or confinement could be partially alleviated. Hydrodynamic and sediment transport modelling will evaluate how alternative geometries influence peak flows, sediment mobilisation, and flood risk under current and projected climate conditions.
The project aims to identify strategic opportunities for limited or more comprehensive channel and bank restoration that improve geohydrodynamic performance, reduce flood hazards, and enhance ecological and geomorphic function. Outcomes will provide evidence‑based guidance for urban planning, stream restoration, and climate‑adaptation strategies in Hobart and other rapidly urbanising mountainous cities.

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:
- a living allowance stipend funded by University of Tasmania of $34,315 per annum for 3.5 years (PhD) or 2 years (Master by Research)
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
A tuition fee offset may be offered to eligible international applicants following competitive assessment

Selection criteria
The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.
Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:
- Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with GIS software and geospatial analysis packages
Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:
- Past study or practical experience in river restoration, river management or fluvial geomorphology
- Willingness to conduct fieldwork in mountain river settings and urban river systems
