Broadening engagement with cancer trials

About the research project

Consumer engagement is important in cancer trials. However, existing knowledge translation and training tools to support input into different aspects of trial design have not been developed with or for people from diverse backgrounds. People with limited literacy and/or health literacy may struggle with existing tools. Developing tools that work for people from diverse literacy and health literacy backgrounds is one way to improve engagement in trials. This can help encourage community awareness of and participation in research.

This project aims to 1) work with people from non-dominant cultures to adapt existing tools for engagement in trials; and 2) evaluate the adapted tools. This project will include qualitative data collection and analysis, with a focus on community-based participatory research. The project will enable a student to carry out innovative and impactful research in the area of cancer trials.

Funding

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:

• a living allowance stipend funded by University of Tasmania of $34,315 per annum for 3.5 years
• a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
• a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)

A tuition fee offset may be offered to eligible international applicants following competitive assessment

Additional eligibility criteria specific to this project/scholarship:

• Minimum entry requirements in Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of and experience with qualitative research (focus groups, interviews).

Selection criteria

The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.

Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:

• Minimum entry requirements in Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of and experience with qualitative research (focus groups, interviews).

Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:

• Working knowledge of oncology trials
• Working knowledge of implementation science
